23. Recent Use Of Mouthwash Or Recent Dental Work Can Casue High Breath Test Readings

Recent Use Of Mouthwash Or Recent Dental Work Can Casue High Breath Test Readings

Most brands of mouthwash contain alcohol.  If mouthwash is used very close in time to the breath test, the alcohol in the mouthwash can still be in the mouth when the breath test is given.  This remaining alcohol can cause a falsely high reading.

Dental work done within 24 hours of a blood test can also cause falsely high readings on breath tests as some recent dental work can create pockets or spaces where alcohol can accumulate.  This accumulation of alcohol in recent dental work is added to the breath alcohol, thus causing the breath machine to read falsely high.
